It's been 3 weeks now and a bit overdue for the stereotypical windmill picture, so let's get it out of the way. This one is a museum in Haarlem...we haven't see it with the sails up on the blades yet. Believe it or not, you do see quite a few old ones scattered around the countryside that were used for pumping water out of the polders. You also see a lot of newer wind farms to generate electricity....just like the ones up in Meyersdale.

Hi Meg! Good to hear from you. The older style windmills are considered historical landmarks. They have any that are remaining fully counted and cataloged on an historical registry. The one in the photograph is open to the public, although we haven't gone in yet. We still haven't seen one with it's sails up, and therefore operating to know how loud they are. All of the work that they used to do (pump water, grind grain, etc.) is now done with modern equipment. There is a small historical village to the north that is a fully functioning historical site, including windmills, but we can't reach it without car...which hasn't arrived yet.
